How has this experience enabled you to observe your own culture(s)
    with new eyes?
Being placed in a class with a group of kids who are learning the english language has really shown me how diverse Saint Peter has gotten. When I went to Saint Peter schools, there wasn't much diversity. Being able to go back to work with the kids, I can see how much Saint Peter has grown as a community. In particular, the group of kids that I have been able to working with, a majority if them speak arabic. When I was in middle school, there weren't many arabic speaking children.
-Did you have a particular experience that led you to think critically
    about your own culture(s)?
Through language buddies, I have met a 5th grade boy who doesn't speak or understand english very well. Being able to try and interact with him has really made me think about how we as a country really need to have more English learning programs, but also more programs for people that speak english to learn different languages. We expect those from other countries to learn english to interact with us, but maybe we should be learning how to speak languages other then english. The United States is become more diverse every day and soon English will not be the primary language spoken.

During language buddies today, the kids all had their own little projects to do for the first 25 minutes. Some kids had the opportunity to use iPads and play educational video games. Others had to read a short little book and answer questions pertaining to the book. The last group of kids were finishing their bear book and coloring pictures to go with the story they had made for their bear book. While the kids did their activities, I went around to see if anyone of them needed help. For the last 25 minutes of class, the kids got to watch a bit more of the Tom Sawyer movie. Overall, it was a productive day.

For language buddies this Thursday, the kids were surprised with a movie. This is because they reached 400,000 points for reading books through out the year. The movie the kids watched was about Tom Sawyer and depicted his childhood. The kids were very into the movie, and learned many facts about Tom Sawyer. Unfortunately, we were not able to finish most of the movie because of how long it was, but the kids were promised that they will finish the movie next week. Overall, it was an enjoyable period.

Today in class we learned about slime. We had a scholastic article that gave information about how animals use slime to survive. Before reading about how slime helps animals, we watched a short video on slime. The kids then proceeded to write down vocabulary words into their daily journals. During the class period, some of the kids had a hard time staying quiet and listening to the teacher. This made it hard for the kids who were listening to learn about slime. Overall, the vocabulary words took most of the period and the kids were able to read part of the article on slime.

Today in class, the kids read an article on monarch butterflies, and how they are starting to become endangered. This is because the butterflies milkweed leaves that they eat, and lay there eggs on are being destroyed by humans. This causes the monarch butterflies to not have food, which then makes it hard for them to migrate in the winter. After the article, half of the kids came to read a story book on monarch butterflies with me, while the other half worked on a noun and adjective worksheet with the teacher. Once each group was done, the kids switched. This lead us to the end of the class period.

Today in Ms. Kracht's class there was a substitute teacher. As a class, we read an article on orangutans. The 5th graders learned many facts about how orangutans are becoming endangered because trees are being cut down and farmers are shooting mother orangutans when they come to eat their crops. This is a problem because then baby orangutans are left helpless. To solve this problem, baby orangutans are taken into orangutan nurseries until they are able to live on their own. After reading the article, the kids answered a few questions about the article to better help understand what they had just read.

Today in class we split into two reading groups. Each group had to read about pandas. In the group I lead, we read about a panda named Mei-Ling. Each 5th grader took a turn to read a page until we finished the book. We learned many fascinating facts about pandas. For example, Pandas have 1-2 babies every two years. The fifth graders wrote the many fascinating facts that we found through out the book down in their notebook. Reading the book and taking notes took up all of our time during class. If we had time left, we would of gotten the chance to also read a scholastic article on pandas as well.

Today in Ms.Kracht class, the fifth graders started out with a worksheet. They had to correct what was wrong in a few sentences, find which words were miss spelled, and come up with words that rhymed with the word time. After the worksheet, the kids split up in two groups. One group read the last chapter of their book with me, while the other group read with Ms. Kracht. At the end of reading, we all came back together, and the kids had to take a small test on the book. In the test, they had to write 2 to 3 sentence about each chapter in the book, and draw a picture to represent what went on. I went around, and help with any of the questions the kids had on the test. It was a great time being able to help, and work with the kids.

Today I went to the Saint Peter Middle school to help Ms. Kracht with her 5th grade class. In class we read part of a book to help the kids learn how to read, and better understand english better. I sat by a girl name Deisy who shared her book with me. Ms. Kracht had the boys and girls take turns reading each paragraph together with her. This allowed every student to get a chance to read the book. After reading a chapter, as a class, we answered some questioned that followed along with that particular chapter. The kids seemed very excited to read, come up with answers, and put the answers into full sentences to write down in their notebooks.
