For the second visit to North Elementary School, I had a very similar experience, working with the same student on the same subject. This time the student recognized me and seemed sort of eager to get to work on multiplication problems. Although still seemingly quite difficult for him to comprehend, it seemed like he had a slightly better grasp on multiplication as a whole. When we got started, he was very ready to just say a random number to try and guess the answer, but I decided it would be best to have him explain how to get the right answer so that even if it was unknown, the student would still be able to figure it out through problem solving. This seemed to work because a few problems in, the student would still try and guess, but as soon as I said "NOPE, tell me how we can figure out this problem" and he got right to work solving the math problem. It was so awesome to see how he was comprehending the material better and could explain how to solve a multiplication problem if he was unsure of the proper answer. I also think that because there were fewer hallway distractions occurring, the student was able to pay better attention to what we were supposed to be doing. That doesn't go without the frequent interruptions of multiplication by the student. This time specifically, he talked about his family, and he wanted to know about mine. Because we were supposed to get through quite a few pages, I kept the chatter to a minimum, but he was super excited to learn about my family. He talked a lot about his mom and what she does. Overall I had a great visit with the student at North Elementary School, and it was so wonderful to watch him progress in his knowledge of multiplication, as it was a concept very difficult for him to comprehend.

For this service, I went to the Saint Peter High school to help out Profe Englehorn with oral examinations again. I arrived and there were two other Gustavus students with me. This was a very enjoyable tip to the High school, and many of the students are quite good at Spanish for only their second year of a foreign language. The visit started out by asking the students some questions about Christmas, songs, New Year's, and Three Kings Day. Next, we asked a few questions on the list for the oral exam and had multiple answer each one. Then we paired up and headed out into the hallway to administer the exams. The oral exams were thirteen questions. After the exam, we contemplated scores and waited for the next student to come into the hallway. Overall, the students did pretty well.

For this service, I helped Profe Englehorn with giving oral exams to Spanish 2 students. I started my trip to the high school by standing in front of the class, allowing them to ask me their questions about myself. I also asked the students questions about themselves, and followed the guide for their oral exam. After they had their chance to ask me the questions, I went out into the hallway to give the exams. I had a sheet to follow, and asked them their questions. There was thirteen questions. For seven, I asked them the questions in Spanish, two-three, I asked them how to say something in Spanish, and then they asked me three questions.

This final visit to South Elementary school went fairly well. The children were a tad energetic, but that is understandable, knowing that it is the holiday season. We started by singing the Buenos días song twice with them (because they love it so much), and ending the songs with the color and number song. After we finished singing, it was time for the presentation of short phrases. We had them start by standing up, as sitting is the first word of the presentation. We have found that this lesson works best to have total engagement, and act out each of the phrases. The children were starting to remember a few of the phrases this week, and that was so fun to see. They really like buenos noches and hasta luego. We went through all of the words a couple times and moved onto games. My game was the modified bingo, which was not a huge hit unfortunately. They were not too keen on playing, which made me have to remind them about star pride more often than I would have liked too. However, Mrs. Sizer came over and reminded them about their behavior which seemed to do the trick for the rest of the game. Moving into the story, the kids loved how Fred and Ted were complete opposites of each other. I chose this book because I was able to use some phrases and colors that they could recognize, so I kept them in Spanish. When we came back to sing our final goodbye song, the children sang us a song to say that we are special, and it stole my heart. They all wanted to give us hugs as we were leaving, and this is where I really could see the impact that I made on these childrens' life as a volunteer for an hour a week. I was someone that they could look up to, ask questions, and just listen to their nonsense remarks. I was hopefully able to instill an interest in other cultures to a couple of the children, and most importantly, they saw me as one of their friends. I think I could have complimented the good behavior a bit more during the game and story, as it probably would have promoted more good behavior, but that is not very important. Overall, this was a good visit to South Elementary School!

This past hour at South Elementary went extremely well. The children seemed really engaged, were able to offer up answers is Spanish. Additionally, they were well behaved without much guidance from Mrs. Sizer. The visit started off as normal, expect we did a lot of repetition with the short phrases while expecting them to follow our actions. This method worked EXTREMELY well. The students started to catch on quickly to the phrases that we were trying to teach. When we moved on the games, my group was so well behaved, and they all got their bucket filler slips! We played "bingo" where I had them point to a number on their sheet and then they had to tell me the color. This seemed to work quite well. Many could remember the numbers and the colors which was promising. When I read my story, the kids loved it and it was the perfect length to read. Overall, I wish all of the visits to South Elementary could happen like this.

During this visit to Ecumen, we did a sing-a-long and exercise. There was a great turnout of interested residents, and a lot of fun was had. We decided to sing the songs to the standard sing-a-long and many residents joined us. We worked to keep them on the same page and even go two blow bubbles during one of the songs! This was a great visit to Ecumen(:

This visit toy South Elementary did not go too well. The kids had quite a bit of energy and could not sit still. When we got there, We started our powerpoint, and they did not seem too interested in new material until Mrs. Sizer scolded them for not showing their best star pride. After this, they acted a little bit better, but still not great. When we finally go through the presentation, the kids took a while to get to their groups, and my group continued to not listen. I had to remind them just about every 15 seconds to quiet down and sit still. Mrs Sizer saw this and actually took three students out of my group and left me with two students to read to and play bingo with. Once they were removed, my group went a lot smoother. Eventually, the three students returned, apologized, and they acted a bit better after that. I left feeling quite defeated, but I hope next time goes better.
