Fall18-SPA-102-001 Exploring the Spanish World II

Going into the community service program I had no idea what to expect because I never really volunteered volunteered in the educational department helping people understand a lecture better or just helping out with a class in general. Nonetheless I figure this voluntary experience was going to involve me breaking down the complex ideas presented to the students in a much simpler manner. WIth that idea in mind, I thought this volunteer experience was going to be a long tedious process because of the responsibilities that comes with it. However, this volunteer experience has been one of the greatest experiences of my life because I had the opportunity to share and experience various different cultures specifically of the somali and hispanic community. The different interactions i encountered with these group of people were priceless. I experience various aspect of their culture through their language, food, and through discussions of their cultural beliefs. One of the biggest lessons both cultures thought me was the act of inclusion or togetherness. The bond these two cultures share with their family is so great that it reflects upon those who are not family. I was quite intimidated at the beginning of this volunteer journey because I was concerned about what these students will think of me. However, they were the most welcoming group I've ever interacted with. Right on the first day, they introduced themselves and started asking me personal questions to further expresses their interest in me. I got so close with these groups of people that I felt like they were apart of my family. Another big lessons i learn from these unique group of people is to be humble and never give up on my dreams. Despite the ages and responsibilities of these adults, they are humble enough to still take time money and effort to get educated which shows how much education means to them. Overall, i'm very privileged to have this opportunity because I was able to learn cherishable life lessons and skills that would be of use for the rest of my life.

Today, we focused more on the social aspect of the community service engagement. During this meeting, i got a chance to learn about the student's life, culture, and believes specifically the hispanic and somali community. This was a really intriguing meeting because it gave me a different outlook on the world and also showed me how unique each and every individual is. Overall this was a great experience.

Today, i got the chance to meet a group of somali ladies and also an hispanic man. We worked on the pronunciation and meaning of two words. After we had a group discussion on the variety of ways to use these words. In regards to prononciation we broke the words down into 3 sections, practiced the individual section pronunciation and then later put them all together. This was really effective because the activity got us engaged in interesting topics about the different meanings the words have in their native tongue. Overall, this activity was really effective because i got the opportunity to learn new words from different languages and also gave be an interesting perspective on the different cultures that are represented in the program.

La cultura va de la mano con la lengua.

Today, I got the opportunity to work on some math with a gentleman from the hispanic community. We worked on some problems with different types of fractions. This was quite tough for me because factions are one of my biggest weaknesses and doing those exercises made me realized how much I forgot and needed to review. Although I struggled with helping him go through these exercises, he was very respectful and even went a step further to teach me more than I thought him. This also showed how vulnerable I was as a person which then created a sense of comfort between us. Overall, this session gave me a great opportunity to learn from others.

Today, I got a chance to meet two lovely men from the hispanic community, a father and a son. While helping out these gentlemen, I felt very awkward because I had to transition from helping out someone who is my age mate to someone who is much older than me. Although it was a bit challenging i addressed both men with respect while helping them understand the material. In addition, I showed them how vulnerable I was by speaking spanish in front of them although I'm no where fluent. After I said a couple of sentences they smile and said "you speak really good spanish my friend" I then responded and said "you all speak very good english also." This act of vulnerability caused them to open up more because it showed them that you don't have to be perfect at a language to speak it. It also showed them that just as they are learning from me I'm also learning from them. Overall this session was a success.

Today I got a chance to teach about the students about the computer and the internet. While doing this, I realized how much I still need to learn about the parts of the computer and the internet in general. This was a very interesting session because it brought back lots of memories from my childhood when I was also learning about the parts of the computer. This session was also effective because as i was teaching them, I was also reviewing a lot of things I forgot. Overall, this was a great session.

When volunteering today i got a chance to meet two lovely ladies from the somali community. While volunteering a discussion about an incident where 2 of my classmates who happens to be Somali were drowned in a pond in Chaska. When this discussion came about, they were very sad however, I expressed my sincere condolence for the death and encouraged them to always look on the bright side of life and also be kind to one another because you one knows when their last day on this planet is going to be. Although this is not an educational matter I felt really good that I was able to share some encouraging words to them.

In my community service experience today, i worked with a wonderful man called Carlos. I got a chance to get to know him a little bit and share a little bit about myself to him. This gave me a chance to learn about the cultures and practices of the hispanic community and above all, it enhanced my creativity as i find different ways to help explain complex ideas in a simpler manner. Overall I’m really excited about helping the Hispanic Community in St Peter.

Nonetheless i figure this voluntary experience was going to involve me breaking down the complex ideas presented to the students in a much simpler manner. I believe i could be of great benefit to the Hispanic community in ST. Peter because with my multilingual abilities I could serve as a bridge to help convey complex ideas in english and break it down into simple comprehensive sentences in spanish to promote the Hispanic community’s understanding of the english language. My opened minded character and passion to help other students succeed is also going to enhance the relationship I share with these students. Being a part of this community service program is going to really beneficial to me because it will enhance my ability to work with people which is a vital skill to have in the real world.
