Since today was my last day I would like to reflect back on the time I spent with the kids. I had a lot of fun this semester with the kids from my flag football team and getting to know the rest of my students. We laughed a lot and I feel as though I helped them learn at least a little. I also enjoyed working with my spanish and the student I helped a couple times. Even though I didn’t get to much I like to think I helped this student improve his english and experience at least a little. Overall it was a good experience. I wish I had more chances to use my spanish but I had fun working with the kids.
Today I was again sent across the hall to work with the spanish speaking student I worked with previously. Again it was a very refreshing experience. I helped him write a letter to his future self. I loved hearing his ideas and practicing my spanish at the same time. He seemed to be more open and willing to talk this time since he already knew me. I also felt more confident in my ability to help. It seemed to be a much more relaxing and comfortable interaction for both of us. I also go to go back to my other classroom and help my kids finish a similar assignment. It was a good day because I got to hang with the kids from my class but also got to use some of my spanish again.
This week was a lot of fun at CBL. The class did an activity for thanksgiving where they traced their hands and wrote things they were thankful for on each finger. They then got to decorate their drawings and we helped them hang them up in the hall. I walked around the class and helped kids color and think of things they were thankful for. This one very enjoyable. It was great to see all the kids be able to recognize all the great things they have in their lives. Reflecting after my first couple weeks this semester helping in the school I have enjoyed it for the most part. I love the kids(even though they are a handful and can get quite obnoxious) and I love watching them grow. I do wish I had more opportunities to use my spanish.
I didn't use any spanish today but I felt like I really connected with my students. We watched videos and did interact vie activities during my time. This gave me a good opportunity to spend time talking with and helping all the students. At the end of class we had a dance off where the teacher was the judge. The kids got a little out of hand and I had to help keep them under control but I think overall everyone was having fun. It is cool to see how much the kids look up to and respect kids my age when, in reality, we are just kids too. This is what makes it so easy to have fun with and bond with the kids.
This week I worked in a different the classroom than I usually work at. I was sent to a class down the hall to help with a spanish speaking student. I didn't ask where he was from but he spoke fairly good spanish and a little english too. I helped him with a reading assignment. It was kind of fun working though it using my spanish and his english to communicate. After having worked with kids from my other class it was clear that it was much harder for this student. I was glad to give him some one on one help even though I was scared I would mess up and sound stupid. Luckily I think maybe did ok. It was good to get the chance to step outside my comfort zone and use some spanish.
Today right when I walked in the door of the classroom I was greeted by enthusiastic hellos and excited little kids. It makes my happy to see how much I can brighten these kids’ day and it is always fun to see the kids that are in my class from my flag football team. We spent most of the time I was there doing reading time where the students pick partners to read with. I joined a pair and helped them sound out words and read to them. Again there were no spanish speaking students for me to work with but I had fun helping the students grow. I am excited to go back and have fun with the kids but I hope I get a chance to use my spanish in the future.
This week the kids had silent work time. I was not able to do much other than quietly help some of them on reading. I can tell this semester is going to be much different than last year. Spring semester last year I completed my CBL at Le Center with spanish speaking adults in the surrounding community. All those people were there specifically to learn english and I spent all my time using spanish to communicate and help them learn english. In the elementary school it is much more general help with the students. It is less pressure but all less spanish. I think it will be a fun semester so far I really like the students in my class.
