Spring18-EDU 230-002 Social Foundations of Education and Student Needs

Today was weirdly chill. The kids were finishing their 3D drawings and then were rolling balls of yarn for their next unit in weaving. One student was really not focusing and wasn't being responsible with the yarn. This was kind of my first time really cracking down on a student to keep working, so I took the yarn and made him pull out his drawing and start learning how to finish it. He didn't really work on it much, but he did pull it out and sit at his desk for the majority of the rest of the class.
Also, a few other students were coming up to me and asking for help, which was nice. I noticed how overwhelming it is to be asked to help by a bunch of students at once. I suppose its something you learn with experience.

They started a new project today, and I helped Eva with some tallying from their last project.
Some of the boys were talking about the school dance and who they were going to ask to go with them, and I was kind of joking around with them about it; middle school boys are so funny.
Some students were being irresponsible with their electronics and it seemed really difficult to manage that; I'm not sure how I will manage electronics in my classroom, just from very minimal experience with that.

Today felt like a pretty normal day. The kids were working on their armatures, which were starting to turn out really well. I walked around and tried guessing what the animals were, as they were supposed to mix 2 animals. A few of them worked in pairs.
I had helped a couple girls paint their project, and I had noticed that all my attention was on those 2 students, and not the rest of the class. It was hard multitasking like that, but I liked working one-on-one with them.
It was fun watching them concentrate on that project, and I could tell they were really enjoying it.

Eva and I talked about getting another "shift," so I added an extra day to help get my hours in. I am still in the same class, just on Fridays.
The kids were surprised to see me on a Friday, and the weather was beautiful so the kids were just crazy and ready to get out of class. It was really hard to keep them working and focused. I think I'm slowly getting better at managing the classroom from one place, and also with disciplining/getting them to focus. Sometimes I see Eva getting frustrated, and I only hope I'm helping in some way by providing an extra pair of eyes and answering questions when she's busy. I couldn't imagine running a classroom on my own yet!

I have noticed the kids getting more comfortable having me in the classroom. Many of them ask me questions and some of the boys ask me about video games and college and such. I've also noticed how much of the time, some kids neglect to clean up after themselves and I had never realized how much the teacher does outside of class time.

Today, the kids worked on their choice-based art and I noticed a lot of restlessness in them. Eva told me that they were ahead of the rest of the classes, so they had more time to do that. Many of them did nothing for the hour, so I was trying to get them to talk to me about ideas they might have. It's hard to keep track of the entire classroom with that many kids, so I was trying to help Eva out. In the end, Eva put her foot down and said those who were working today could work tomorrow, but the others had to do vocab. It was a nice way of using incentive and to give them consequences for not participating.

I got to do art with some students today. They're a little more comfortable with me now so they asked me questions and I helped them find ideas for art. It was super fun!
