Today I once again went to see the kindergarteners at North elementary, and with them we practiced reviewing numbers, colors, and then we began to introduce the family members along with the pronunciations. Because there was a substitute in class today, the attention span of the students was not where it had been in past weeks, but we then were able to practice our skills on bringing the ideas back to what we were teaching them and classroom management.
Once again I met with Kimberline, a student that I helped in the Fall in a foods class in the middle school, and we met at River Rock cafe and worked on her math homework and just practice conversing in English. I was happy to see that she gained more confidence in speaking in English, and she seems more comfortable and laid-back at the cafe. I was happy to help her with her math homework and her discussion for her English class. We practiced pronunciation and how to phrase the sentences in English until she felt comfortable saying them on her own.
Today was the second time that we went to Mrs. Depuydt's classroom at North elementary, and we reviewed once more the colors, numbers, and animals associated with lesson 1. Next week will be the last time we review before we switch to lesson 2. It was fun to see the kids work as they tried to remember all of the things we taught them a week ago and then connect it to the songs we sang together and the books we read. They are so determined to remember everything; their spunky and energetic attitudes make it so much more fun!
Today was my first experience working with the kindergarten students at the St. Peter elementary school. Myself, along with 2 other students of SPA-280, went to Ms. Depuydt's class and taught her students Spanish for an hour. We worked on colors, numbers, and animals, and then incorporated those themes into the games and stories that we read to the class. It was an amazing and enjoyable time. The kids were so enthusiastic about learning Spanish, and to see that untamed hunger for learning was so satisfying. I cannot wait to go back!!
On Monday night, I met with Kimberline at River Rock and we talked about her classes as well as worked through some worksheets that she did not understand completely for her Algebra class. We discussed how to pronounce the fractions in English, as well as the ideas of multiplication, division, and more complicated formulas. It was a learning experience for me as well, because I had to figure out how to work around the words I didn't know how to say, and then together we could piece it all together.
On Wednesday night I brought Jaxon to the Cafe Flamenco performance and then we walked to the Caf and got cookies before our hour together was over. He seemed to really enjoy it and so did I, and afterwords he talked about how he liked the dancers and the big dresses that the dancers were. I made my night to see that he was enjoying the dancing as much as I was, and it was just a good night together :).
On Wednesday night, Jaxon and I went to the park on College Ave and played on the swings and the slides before coming back to Pittman. We played ping pong and pool and then read a few Dr. Seuss books. It was fun for me to help him read and pronounce the tongue-twisters. He 'beat' me at ping pong and giggled about it for the rest of our hour :).
