About

Thank you so much for your interest in tutoring with the Latino Student Fund! You have stepped up to support our community in this time of increased need and we thank you for your dedication to the community and our families.

Tutoring Program Plan

Our tutoring program, serving PreK-12th grade students in math and reading. This year we will have virtual and in-person programming. The Virtual tutoring programming for the fall will start from September 28, 2021 through December 10, 2021; sessions will be available between 4-6PM Tuesdays through Fridays. You DO NOT need to be available during all of these times, rather you will choose at least two hours within this time frame to tutor weekly. We will require students and tutors to sign up for regular, weekly schedules. This means that rather than sign up for any sessions you are available each week, you will be paired with one or more students whom you will work with at the same times each week for the entire fall semester based on you and your student’s availability.

The in-Person tutoring programming for the fall will start October 2nd through at least December 11, 2021; Saturdays from 9:30-11:30AM you will be paired with one or more students whom you will work each Saturday morning for the entire fall semester at your selected in-person site (DC, MC and PGC). * If for any unforeseen reason any site needs to close down the tutoring programming will resume virtually every Saturday at the same time.

Zoom Meetings

We use Zoom video conferencing for the virtual tutoring. At the top of each hour, tutors and students will come together using a link we will send out beforehand. Everyone will join one video call, then be split into pairs in digital "breakout rooms." Tutoring Coordinators will bounce around each "room" and check in on each pair. Zoom has amazing features like screen-sharing, so tutors will be able to see students' screens and a digital whiteboard. If this is overwhelming to you, fear not: we are here to help if you'd like support in figuring out video conferencing technology.

Curriculum

We will provide Khan Academy, ReadWorks, and Native Language Literacy activities for you to work on with your students. If you work with a student in PreK through 3rd grade, we will provide all the materials to do our Early Literacy Initiative with them (for further explanation on the Early Literacy Initiative program, scroll down to the next paragraph of this email). You can fill an important role in helping them strengthen what they learned last school year and stay on top of new material they’re learning during this challenging time.

Early Literacy Initiative

The Early Learning Initiative (ELI) is a program where students in PreK through 3rd grade work with their regular tutor on letter-sound recognition, letter formation, word recognition, and reading fluency. Like always, you will be provided with all materials required to tutor in ELI. If you prefer to work with a PreK through 3rd grade student you will be trained in our Early Literacy Initiative, based on the Orton-Gillingham teaching method, and learn teaching skills that can help you improve the literacy of any child.

Tutor Form

All tutors, new and returning, must complete our LSF 2021-2022 Tutor Form. The form contains MANDATORY training in Khan Academy, ReadWorks, and our Native Language Literacy Initiative, as well as Early Literacy Initiative training for those working with students in PreK through 3rd grade. This Fall, we will be using several programs during our tutoring sessions, including Khan Academy, ReadWorks, and Duolingo or Quizlet. Students and tutors should be using these materials during the tutoring session, so it’s important that you understand how to use all of the programs. You will need to complete the form by answering a questionnaire, watching the training videos, and completing a brief quiz. If you are planning to work with a student between the grades of PreK through 3rd grade, the entire form will take about two hours to complete due to the Early Literacy component. If you would prefer to work with a student in 4th grade or above, the form will take about an hour to complete.

If you have never tutored with us before, please make an account on  https://www.givepulse.com/group/199575-Latino-Student-Fund and sign up for an orientation session. We ask that you complete the LSF 2021-2022 Tutor Form BEFORE attending the orientation. LSF 2021-2022 Tutor Training Form

We will send out the link to this Zoom meeting before the orientation! Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions at tutoringprogram@latinostudentfund.org.
