Organizational Information: Windhaven Therapeutic Riding (WHTR) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization devoted to providing a fun and safe environment for all service members and Veterans who struggle with physical and invisible wounds of war. Windhaven Therapeutic Riding's mission is to utilize the mutually beneficial human-equine relationship to promote healing of Active duty, Reserves and Veterans suffering from the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and other service-related injuries. Opportunities for student learning and volunteering or for Veterans who are interested in alternative treatment for PTSD, TBI or other related injuries.Opportunity Description: Students will assist with the daily care and socializing of the horses at Windhaven. Activities will include cleaning stalls or facilities, feeding, and walking/ training the horses. Days/Times: Generally 2-4 hours per visit, Monday through Saturday, 8:30 am-12pm. Requirements: Please dress appropriately for working with horses and being outdoors. Closed toed shoes are required and sturdy rubber boots are recommended. Wear warm clothing and bring water. Bring water and snacks. Please note that there is always the risk of physical injury due to working with horses and materials and machinery related to facility maintenance. Risk of emotional distress due to the sometimes sick and injured horses. Possible allergen risk to hay. Students MUST contact Jeanette Staley at volunteer.WHTR@gmail.com. in order to sign up volunteer opportunities. Students MUST dress modestly and appropriate for the weather. All Students are responsible for bringing a Record of Civic Engagement Form each time they are on site or at the community agency where they are serving. Additionally, students are required to obtain the appropriate signature from their community partner supervisor. Students can pick up a blank form at the CCE office (CUB LL48) on the main WSU Pullman Campus or online here. Completed hours must be submitted online here.
